Yes, like everyone else over lockdown, we binged ‘The Bold Type’. And for sure, it made our evenings so much better.

Although the show was released in 2017, I am pretty much thanking my blessings that it only came to light this year on Netflix because I have watched everything from The Tiger King to Selling Sunsets throughout this pandemic. The thing about this show is that it brought a type of laughter and relatability that my millennial self simply wanted to deny, yet also shout about.

But while it evoked belly laughter, it provoked interesting thoughts and life values. So, to celebrate the new season commencing tonight, let’s talk about the 6 things ‘The Bold Type’ taught me:

1. Don't settle in love (or life):

Life has the potential to be hard enough without dating someone who doesn’t want to show you off to the world. Sutton and Richard hit us in the feels differently with that on-screen chemistry and taboo workplace relationship. Yes, we love them! But when the cookie crumbles and a relationship has to be a secret, it probably shouldn’t be a relationship at all. Walking away from things and people that no longer serve you is a brave thing to do.

2. Even the most 'got it together' people, don't always have it together:

It is so easy to look at people from the outside and think they have it all: the job, the family, the status. But the reality is, we never really know what a person is going through. It is all just a game of perception. Jacqueline Carlyle gives us an honest depiction of just how little we can know about a person behind closed doors. While her whole career is held on a pedestal and everyone around her is in a constant state of admiration of her persona, she deals with her own personal hardships in everyday life. We all have them, and if Jacqueline Carlyle can navigate through it in those heels, then so can we.

3. Nothing heals the soul like a good friendship:

No matter what you’re going through in this life, there is just something about venting, gossiping, crying, laughing and all of the in-between with your girlfriends. They are the ones who are shouting in your corner when you need the support, picking up the pieces when you are too tired to do so, or just simply having a bottle of wine on hand... You know, just in case. Value and cherish the good ones, they’re the real keepers.

4. Social Media truly is the good, the bad and the ugly:

Millennials live and breathe for the internet, but more importantly; social media. It is a constant theme throughout the show's seasons with Kat being the social media manager at Scarlet. We see how it brings forward important conversations; showing unfiltered beauty and creating awareness about important issues in everyday life. However, we also watch how quickly it can turn its back on you and creates what can only be called a sh*t storm in the blink of an eye. You think the cheetah is the fastest animal on earth? Well, then you don’t know the internet.

5. Stop taking yourself so seriously:

If you’re paying close attention, the characters in the show, with particular emphasis on the trio, are always living in the moment. Whether it is a sing-song in the car, dancing it out, or partaking in cringe-worthy karaoke; they just have fun. It is fair to say they use the fashion closets ever-rotating door to their advantage, having horrendous snow-storm fashion shows and creating outfits for a hen party that should never see the light of day. So just laugh and enjoy yourself, no matter what anyone else thinks.

6. Hard work and determination will pay off, if you're willing to fail:

At the start of the show, the three girls are truly at the beginning of their journeys. We watch them take risks, be rejected, get it so wrong and do it so right. If you’ve made it to the final season, then you’ll know all too well that none of them are standing where they started and that’s the point of it all; if you take chances on yourself and work hard, you can only go forward.

And there you have it, just a couple of things we've taken from the show. If you haven't watched it yet, then I am extremely jealous of you right now because you get to start it from the start. But if you are like me and have been awaiting the final 6 episodes, then find it on Freeform tonight or streaming on Hulu tomorrow.

Love,
